Reading Recovery Lesson Plan
Curriculum Objectives:
RF.1.1 Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print
RF.1.2 Demonstrates understanding of unspoken words, syllables, and sounds
RF.1.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words
RF.1.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension
W.1.5 With guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions, and add details to strengthen writing as needed.
Reading Recovery lessons are tailored to the individual needs of students and consist of the following components: (Individual daily Lesson Records/Running Records in student folders.)
Lesson Components:
Familiar Reading - Student spends 5 minutes reading books that he/she is already familiar with
in order to build fluency.Running Record - Teacher takes a running record of the new book from the day before in order to analyze the reading strategies the student is using and neglecting.
Letter/Word Work - Student manipulates magnetic letters in order to learn how letters and words work through: Letter ID activities
ü Visual discrimination activities
ü Taking High Frequency words to fluency
ü Breaking words apart
Writing - Student dictates a sentence to the teacher and writes the sentence with support:
ü Hearing and recording sounds in words through the use of sound/spelling boxes
ü Taking High frequency words to fluency
ü Working on letter formation
Cut-Up Sentence - Teacher writes student’s dictated sentence on a sentence strip & student puts it back together. This portion of the lesson can be used to work on:
ü Concepts about print
ü 1:1 matching/directionality/return sweep
ü Locating chunks in words
ü Phrasing
New Book - Teacher introduces a new book to the student through the following steps:
ü Teacher gives the student a snap shot of what the story is about.
ü Student takes a picture walk while the teacher helps the student make connections.
ü Teacher helps the student predict & locate known & unknown words.
ü Student reads new book with the support of the teacher in using reading strategies.
Individual lessons maintained in each student's folder.
